Christian Kabeya, known as Kabel (1995, Kinshasa), is a versatile artist and performer from the Democratic Republic of Congo. He splits his time between Lubumbashi and Kinshasa and holds a degree in Visual Arts and Visual Communication from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa. His work merges sculpture, installation, photography, and performance.
Through his practice, he develops a research-based approach to traditional narratives, the transformation of discarded matter, and the political resonances of the body, exploring these themes both in public space and on stage.
He notably took part in the KinAct International Festival as a photographer and performer, before presenting an engaging performance in 2020, marking the 60th anniversary of the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s independence. He was also among the artists selected for the commemorative exhibition celebrating the Academy of Fine Arts’ 75th anniversary in Kinshasa.
His career includes participation in major events such as the Yango 2 Biennale, the Artembo 5 Festival, and the TAYARI Lubumbashi Art Fair in 2025. In Lubumbashi, he has collaborated with leading art institutions, including the Picha Art & Research Centre as part of the Ku Tshimba Burima workshop led by Ana Kovačić, and the Biasasa Vu & Entendu Art Centre. In 2026, he was invited to create a performance for the closing of the Jeunesse Créative project at the Institute of Fine Arts in Lubumbashi, implemented by Africalia with the support of Enabel. That same year, he took part in the group photography exhibition of the Mampala Foto Lubumbashi International Festival, where he also presented an improvised performance.
In 2025–2026, he was selected for the Picha Workshops and subsequently for the 9th edition of the Lubumbashi Biennale, marking a new stage in the development and recognition of his practice within the contemporary art scene.
