Picha

Established in 2008 by a group of dedicated artists and cultural professionals in Lubumbashi.

The name “Picha,” meaning “image” in Swahili, embodies the collective’s goal of using art and visuals to tell stories and initiate conversations.

Vision: To develop a sustainable ecosystem for art and culture within the Democratic Republic of the Congo, supporting local talent and encouraging global dialogue.

Picha is more than just an organization; it’s a vibrant hub for creativity and collaboration. It constantly evolves, launching new projects and opportunities beyond its main event, the Biennale. Its key initiatives include:

History of the Lubumbashi Biennale

Founded in 2008 by the Picha collective, the Lubumbashi Biennale has grown into a key artistic event in Central Africa.

It was established to promote dialogue through contemporary art, uniting local and international artists to explore themes that mirror the social, cultural, and political realities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and beyond.
