Picha is a contemporary art platform located in Lubumbashi, founded in 2008 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). It serves as an art and research hub established by a collective of Congolese artists and cultural professionals. The name Picha, meaning “image” in Swahili, symbolizes the group’s main goal: to use art, imagery, and modern creation to tell stories, explore regional realities, and promote new dialogue forms.

Since its inception, Picha has created an independent space dedicated to contemporary art in the DRC, supporting research, artistic creation, and exchanges between Congolese and international artists.

A Collective of Artists at Picha’s Core

Picha is primarily a collective effort, driven by artists and cultural workers who aim to develop the art scene in Lubumbashi and across the DRC. Key members include Sammy Baloji, an artist, co-founder of Picha, and founder of the Lubumbashi Biennale, along with George Senga, Rosa Spaliviero, and Jean Katambayi. Their work—spanning photography, installation, drawing, video, research, and visual arts—showcases the diversity of contemporary Congolese art and the variety of perspectives emerging from Lubumbashi.

Picha operates as a vibrant organization, serving as an art center, production space, research hub, and collaboration network. Its main activities include:

• The Lubumbashi Biennale, a key international platform for contemporary art in Central Africa;
• Picha Workshops, an annual program offering residencies, workshops, productions, exhibitions, and artist support;
• Research projects, gatherings, and discussions focused on art, society, and territory;
• Collaborations with artists, curators, researchers, and institutions both within the DRC and internationally;
•  The development of new spaces and initiatives centered on creation, knowledge sharing, and community engagement.

Picha strives to build a sustainable ecosystem for contemporary art and culture in the DRC by supporting local artists and fostering global connections.
