Cécile Massart is a Belgian artist whose work spans multiple media, including drawing, printmaking, installation, photography, video, and artist’s books. She fosters dialogue among material, image, and memory, using technique as a means of expression rather than an end in itself. Her approach begins with traditional techniques and moves toward digital technologies, while examining the tensions between materiality and immateriality. Her career includes extensive teaching and collaborative projects. In 1983, alongside Daniel Bultreys, she was a pioneering figure in computer graphics, developing the Graph and Pixel Story series through 1994, manipulating digital images to reintroduce them into physical space. In 1987, she created Intervention I at the Museum of Modern Art in Brussels, followed by Intervention II at the Museu de Arte Contemporânea in São Paulo.

In 1994, her focus shifted to the landscape as she examined radioactive waste storage sites worldwide, not to conceal waste but to reconsider its meaning. Her 2014 Laboratoires projects investigated memory types that can communicate the enduring threat of waste to future generations. In 2021, her Sarcophagi installation at the Botanical Museum highlighted her approach as a form of thoughtful, active awareness.
