Bonbon Tè Majik/Bonbon Tè Mizik/Pemba

BONBON TÈ MAJIK

Bonbon Tè Majik puts Haitian and Congolese earth into circulation between Port-au-Prince and Lubumbashi. Initiated at documenta fifteen in 2022, the project was developed for the 9th Lubumbashi Biennale around the theme Manger la Terre.

Bonbon Tè Mizik

The project’s soundtrack, Bonbon Tè Mizik is developed with musician Willy Ilumbo, drawing on Ngoma archives, including 78 rpm records from the 1950s, tracing the circulation of rumba between Africa and the Caribbean.

Works in the Exhibition

  1. Bonbon Tè Majik, 2026
Authentic mud cakes from Port-au-Prince, presented in locally assembled packaging as material, food, commodity, and traces of transatlantic history.
  2. Bonbon Tè Mizik, 2026
Handcrafted sleeves containing 33 rpm Ngoma compilations acquired from Planet Ilunga. The records form a working sound archive and part of the artwork.
  3. Pemba: Lubumbashi / Port-au-Prince, 2026
Clay purchased at Lubumbashi’s central market travels to Haiti, where Michel Lafleur develops a parallel artistic response, reversing the journey of the Haitian mud cakes.

Live Performance

During the opening week, Willy Irumbo and his ensemble perform a new work in dialogue with the Ngoma archives. The performance will be recorded and released on vinyl and CD.

A Transatlantic Circuit

Earth and sound circulate between Haiti, Congo, and the Caribbean, bringing histories of slavery, colonialism, migration, trade, and popular music into dialogue.
